Wilson, U.S. Department of Interior, Bureau of Lend Management, Director of the Boi e Interagency Fire Center, Boise, Idaho (FTS: 554-9421). The Department of Interior.'s letter of June 26,_1979 _ _

to Mr. E. Kevin Cornell, NRC, designates Mr. Wilson as the contact with respect to TMIc The interview was conducted-to determine the extent of par ---- - -_

I briefly explained to Mr. Wilson the purpose of the special inquiry and stated that I am part of a group that is contacting the various Federal, State and local agencies that may have been involved in the response to the TMI-2 acci-dent.

I told Mr. Wilson that I would prepare a brief memorandum of our inter-view and that I would send him a copy for his review and any needed revisions or additions.

Mr. Wilson ex'plained that the TMI response by his group was the response of the Interagency Fire Center. This interagency group is made up of 6 different r

Federal agencies.

Its principal mission is to provide emergency response to fires in the Western part of the U.S.

On March 31, 1979, at 1625Z, the Fire Center was called by Bernard Weiss, NRC, and asked to supply a National Forest Radio System 500. This system includes about 250 radios and personnel to.aake it operational. A communications offi-cer and technicians, togert.er with the equipment, was requested at TMI as soon as possible.

By 1830Z on March 31, the communications equipment (1800 pounds) and 6 persons 8

were enroute to TMI in the Fire Center's aircraft (King Air 200). The communica-800624.@

, tions officer came from Atlanta. They arrived at the Harrisburg Airport at 0201Z on April 1 (Friday evening, March 31).

The equipment was operational April 1 and was used principally for communications I

between persons doing radiation monitoring in the vicinity of TMI and persons at the base station at the airport.

Some of the Fire Center's personnel departed TMI on April 7.

The last returned home April 23 with the equipment.

The approximate cost of the Interagency Fire Center's response was $27,000.

NRC will be asked to reimburse the Fire Center.
