NOV 131979 MEMORANDUM FOR:
Frank J. Miraglia, Leader, Task Group 3 NRC TMI Special Inquiry Group FROM:
Ronald R. Bellamy, Task Group 3 NRC TMI Special Inquiry Group
SUBJECT:
TELEPHONE CONVERSATION REGARDING TMI IODINE SPECIES On October 22, 1979, I had a telephone conversation with Charles Pelletter of SAI, Inc., in Gaithersburg, Md. The purpose of the conversation w.75 to discuss iodine species data SAI obtained in early April inside the TML-2 Auxiliary Building. The sample SAI analyzed was obtained on April 8, 1979, at the location of area radiation monitor HPR-222. This monitor is on the 305-foot elevation of the auxiliary building. The table below indicates the data obtained by SAI. The overall decontamination factor as reported to Metropolitan Edison by SAI was 1.2, which resulted in the decision to re-place the carbon in the filters.
IODINE SPECIES u Ci/cc
% OF TOTAL Elemental 6.7 X 10-8 25.1 Hypoiodous Acid (H01) 4.8 X 10-8 18.0 Methyl Iodide 7.9 X 10-8 29.6 Particulates 7.3 X 10-8 27.3 These numbers are used to calculate an iodine source term based on the iodine inventories on the carbon filters and the efficiency of these filters. This source term will be included in the final report.
