File No. WM-22 FROM:

J. E. Rothfleisch Uranium Recovery Licensing Branch Division of Waste Management

SUBJECT:

COMPLETION OF WASTE MANAGEMENT URANIUM REC 0VERY LICENSING BRANCH REVIEW 0F COTTER CORPORATION PROPOSAL TO DISPOSE OF CONTAMINATED TRASH IN CANON CITY URANIUM MILL TAILINGS IMP 0UNDMENT At the request of the Colorado State Department of Health (letter from A. J. Hazle to G. W. Kerr, February 26, 1980), the subject proposal was reviewed by the WMUR staff and staff consultant, Dr. John D. Nelson.

It was determined that the disposal of contaminated solid waste materials in the Hypalon lined tailings impoundment following the procedures i

described in the applicant's proposal was an acceptable plan that would produce no adverse impact on the designed function of the impoundment.

The Colorado State Department of Health was notified of this conclusion by letter from R. A. Scarano to A. J. Hazle dated May 19, 1980, at which time NRC formal involvement in the project was considered to be completed.
