IE Bulletin 79-13, Revision 2, Cracking in Feedwater System Piping

Dear Mr. Engelkin:

In accordance with Item 6 of IE Bulletin 79-13, Revision 2, Cracking in Feedwater System Piping, results of examinations car-ried out at Rancho Seco under item 2 of the Bulletin are outlined below.

The design utilized at Rancho Seco for connection of Auxiliary Feedwater piping to the Steam Generators is one of a welded nozzle connection. This is separate f rom Main Feedwater, which is supplied by means of bolted flange connections from a ring header.

Feedwater level is maintained below the feedwater nozzles dur-ing all plant conditions.

During normal startup, hot standby and above cold shutdown (i.e. above 200*F), the feedwater level within the Steam Generator is maintained essentially constant.

No inter-mittant cold Auxiliary Feedwater injection is utilized. Therefore, no volumetric examination of any Auxiliary Feedwater piping to noa le welds was conducted per the third paragraph of Item 2b of the Bulletin.

A visual inspection of all Main and Auxiliary Feedwater System piping supports and snubbers in containment was performed during our Third Refueling Outage to verify operability and conformance to design with no indications noted.

We consider our response to this Bulletin closed.

Please contact Mr. Ron Colombo, of my staff, if you have any questions.
