Dear Chairman Ahearna:
As you may be aware, this morning I held a press conference discussing a report which was prepared at my recuest by staff of the Meuse Scfince and Technology Committee.
The Committee staff worked in conjunction with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration in the preparation of that report.
The staff report lists those components necessary to construct a Selective Absorbtion System for removing the Krypt:n-85 from Three Mile Island Unit 2, which NASA has on hand at its various facilities.
A copy of this list is enclosed for your review. You will notice that many of these are items which were identified as being " critical" v
in earlier meetings.
The staff report also indicated that under an expedited procedure, this system could be designed, procured, built, tested, and put into operation in about six months.
The formal written report on this scheduling estimate will be forwarded to you as soon as it is completed.
I do not need to remind you that the NRC staff has indicated that the procurement of these components would be a lengthy process and this would contribute to the reason that the Selective Abscrbtion
. System would take too long to put in place.
I am distressed that Committee staff has been able to do in a week what the " experts" tell us would take months.
The equipment in NASA's possession could be easily transferred for use in this system at Three Mile Island.
The remaining components could be obtained in a short period of time.
Again, I must urge the Commission to take a more serious look at this process.
It is becoming increasingly clear that you were not presented' with accurate information reflecting what is possible under an expedited approach.
Sincerely./((.
