Middletown, Pennsylvania 17057 717 944 4041 Writer's Direct Dial Number June 3, 1980 TLL 265 TMI Program Of fice Attn:

J. T. Collins, Deputy Program Director U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission c/o Three Mile Island Nuclear Station Middletown, Pa.

17057

Dear Sir:

Three Mile Island Nuclear Station, Unit II (TMI-2)

Operating License No. DPR-73 Docket No. 50-320 Reactor Building Purge System In our letter of April 16,1980 (TLL 133), we agreed to a filter housing test at -15 inches W. G.

Our original intent was that this test be a static test for 5 minutes at -15 inches. Your staff has expressed concern that the test may not sufficiently demonstrate the capability of the filter housing to withstand negative pressure with the automatic fan shut off set at -15 inches W. G.

As a result, we have modified the testing program to add a dynamic test with a rapid closing of the inlet to the filter housing, with the automatic fan shut off functioning at -15 inches W. G.

This test is considered by Metropolitan Edison to meet the concerns of the NRC.

Sincerely,

/s/ G. K. Hovey G. K. Hovey Director, TMI-II GKH:EDF: hah cc: 6 D
