Dear Phti:

As part of our overall effort on environmental assessment of the accident and cleanup operations at TMI, I have instructed my staff to assess published reports and data concerning reported animal health effects in the vicinity of Tf!I. We have concluded that a technical radiobiological and medical assessment of recorted pathological symotoms in animals would provide a useful addition to the report.

I am therefore requesting you to have prepared a short technical assessment of reported pathological syr.ptons (both radiological and nonradio-logical) in animals as part of your ongoing TMI environmental assessment efforts. Your report will be used as part of s ! rger report being prepared by my staff.

l'y staff can provide assistance regarding data and sources of infomation for the Ti!I area. Dec6use of the nature of the available infomation, it is likely that the assessment will involve the use of qualified expert opinion in the field of animal health and this should be considered in assigning staff and in obtaining other technical assistance. My staff has had infomal discussions with Dr. Bernard Jaroslow to explore technical feasibility of this effort.

It appears that a relatively short-tem assessment of the available infomation by experts will be adequate for our needs and that no new investigations will be required. Sinee i.he report is therefore likely to be relatively short, I am requesting tha'; a draft be completed by June 6,1930. Please feel free to concact Dr. Jerry Kline (492-8251) or Mr. Gerry Gars (492-8280) for additional details ar,d irfemation. Thank you.

Sincerely, G - ^
