Unusual Event 75-5

-nt r

s.

Dear Sir:

l'b b As defined by Technical Specifications " Appendix B",

Section 5.6.2.C, we are reporting the following Unusual Event as UE-75-5.

With the plant operating noraally at 92.5% rated full power, on May 26, 1975 the calculated discharge of dissolved solids was indi-cated to be 36,40,0 lbs. This value exceeds the limit for dissolved solids release of 34,000 lbs. set in the Technical Specifications

" Appendix B", Section 2.3.A.

A higher than normal conductivity value in the cooling tower blowdown, combined with a large retention basin

(

i release on this day resulted in the limits being exceeded. Records

(,I for this parameter are reviewed one month after they occur, resulting in the span of time between occurrence and the reporting date.

To prevent recurrence of this event, a procedure has been instituted to have a calculation performed for the expected daily re-lease of dissolved solids on day when there is to be a retention basin release. This procedure will show if the proposed release will cause the limit to be exceede4 and if so, the release can be spread over a.

longer period. A proposed reengineering of the waste water system would eliminate the possibility of a recurrence of this incident, and the need for the calculation procedure.

There was no plant transient associated with this event.

Respectfully, b.*,)ML
