Dear Mr. O'Reilly:

SUBJECT:

Grand Gulf Nuclear Station Units 1 and 2 Docket Nos. 50-416 & 50-417 File 0272/15525/15526 PRD-80/17, Status Report, Improper Bolt Torque Values Noted on High Pressure Core Spray Pump AECM-80/99 On April 10, 1980, Mississippi Power & Light Company notified Mr. F. Cantrell of your of fice of a Potentially Reportable Deficiency (PRD) at the Grand Gulf Nuclear Station (GGNS) construction site. The deficiency concerns out of specification bolt torque values noted on the High Pressure Core Spray (HPCS) pump. The pump was manufactured by Byron Jackson Pump Division of Borg Warner Corporation and was procured by General Electric for use at GGNS.

Vendor initiated changes to specified bolt torque values resulted in the issuance of a General Electric Field Disposition Instruction (FDI) to accomplish the required manual and procedure changes. The above referenced vendor changes revised the torquing requirements on all bolts, increasing the specified torque values. Torque value checking indicated that some bolts were torqued to values lower than even the original requirements. In addition there is concern for the adequacy of the torquing requirements presented in the original design.
