SUBJECT:

RESEARCH INFORMATION LETTER NO. 77 THE ORIGIN OF SURFACE LINEAMENTS IN NEMAHA COUNTY, KANSAS Enclosed is our assessment of Reseatch Information I,etter No. 77 as requested by your letter to R. Matts ~on, dated February 14, 1980. The RIL is in accordance with Office Letter No. 23. The research data presented in the report has no direct impact on current licensing activities in -

the region; however, it has broadened our seismic data base.

It is recomended that the information in this report be used as input to assess the role of lineaments in the determination of seismic risk in the mid-continent region and in the construction of a seismo-tectonic map.

are conducting.a 5-year geological, seismological and geophysical study of the regional tectonics and The scismicity of the flemaha Uplift and the Midcontinent Gravity Anomaly and other structures in the region.

goal cf this study is to establish a better understanding of earthquake source mechanisms to determine the seismic risk for nuclear power. facilities in this part of the Central Stable Region. The data derived from the study wi:1 provide data in tite development of a seismo-tectonic province map.

ULiC81RC.1ttACI.0E.aE1uL11:

The resul'ts of t'his, study have not had a direct impact on nuclear power plant licensing activities. They identify the linearnents in tiemaha County and appear to demonstrate that the lineaments are not related to the seismicity in the area, which adds to our general knowledge of the geologic tocls that may be employed in establishing th3. tectonic setting of the Central Stable Region.

CuentutstaEnaass The study of the " Origin of Surface Lineaments in flemaha County, Kansas constitutes only a peripheral study

and does not directly address the question of earthquake source mechanisms which is important to an understanding of the sqismic risk in the region. The study is peripheral to the main purpose of the overall resea'rch effort

, but does a' dress a generic issue of some relevance..It is recommended that the data contained in fiUREG/CR-0321 d

be used for ongoing studies in the area which will eventually lead to the development of a seismo-tectonic k province map and a better understanding of the seismic risk for the siting of nuclear facilities.
