Dear Mr. Grimes:
As you will recall, the Maine Bureau of Civil Emergency Preparedness is in the process of developing a contingency plan re Maine Yankee nuclear generating facility. One of the contingency planning elements is the prepositioning and distribution of potassium iodide in the event radiation levels reach the point where medication might be reconnended by appropriate governmental officials.
In reviewing the criteria set forth within NUREG 0654 FEMA R1, it is noticed that the information is incomplete with regard to basic recommended planning guidance. This office has been informally advised that the subject of potas-sium iodide is to be discussed at a seminar to be conducted within the Wash-4 ington D.C. area during the summer months.
It is recommended that all decisions concluded at this forthcoming seminar be forwarded to Federal Emergency Management Agency which in turn may facilitate incorporating realistic planning concepts within this states Peacetime Radio-logical Incident Plan re Maine Yankee.
Your cooperation in this i..'tter will be appreciated.
Sincerely, Lionel A. Cote State Director cy:
