20555 Attn:
Mr. A. Schwencer SEPARATION OF ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT AND SYSTEMS FARLEY NUCLEAR PLANT - UNIT 2 Gentlemen:
Your letter of May 5,1980, requested that Alabama Power Company perform a walkdown of at least 10% of Farley Unit 2 Class lE equipment and cables and associated circuits for conformance to applicable separation criteria. It is the judgement of Alabama Power Company that a more encompassing walkdown was performed in January, 1980, in conjunction with the Fire Protection Program Reevaluation. This walkdown examined approximately 80% of the Class lE electrical equipment and cables and associated circuits for the following purposes:
1.
Separation of redundant Class lE equipment.
2.
Separation of redundant Class lE cables.
3.
Separation of associated circuits (defined as circuits whose failure as a result of a fire could preclude operation of Class 1E cabling or equipment).
Note:
Identification (markings) of Class lE equipment and raceways were utilized during the course of the walkdown and any identification discrepancies were noted and corrected.
This walkdown was performed by Bechtel Power Corporation upon directive by Alabama Power Company for the purpose of determining the type of fire protection necessary for all equipment, cabling, and circuits required for hot shutdown of the unit.
This protection included sprinklers, rerouting cables,. installation of physical barriers, etc., for those cases where the fire separation criteria (20 feet for cables and equipment) was not met.
Although Bechtel Power Corporation was involved in the design of these Class lE items, it is our position that the scope of this walkdown (80% c.f Class 1E systems) and participation by Alabama Power Company ensure its validity.
