Docket No. 50-364 Director of-Nuclear Reactor Regulation U..S. Nuclear Regulatory Comission Washington, D. C.

20555 ATTENTION: Mr. John F. Stolz JOSEPH M. FARLEY NUCLEAR PLANT-UNIT NO. 2 SPENT FUEL TRANSFER TUBE OPERATION Gentlemen:

Your letter dated February 20, 1980 contained a-request for additional information concerning the subject of radiation exposure to personnel from operation of the spent fuel transfer tube (SFTT)~.

Enclosed are plan and elevation layout drawings which show the SFTT. area and' areas adjacent to it.

Based on our design review, the access port adjacent to the fuel transfer tube will be completely filled by solid concrete blocks stacked closely with no mortar joints,.and braced in place with bolted steel plates on both faces.. Also, from our operating experience on Unit 1, we are currently evaluating radiation level measurements taken during the first refueling outage -(Unit 2 measurements should be similar) to determine if additional' shielding will be required in other associated plant areas for that unit.

If it is concluded that additional shielding modifications are needed -on Unit 1, the applicability of such changes to Unit 2 will also be evaluated and implemented as required prior to utilization of.the SFTT with irradiated fuel.

A special radiation survey will 'also be ' conducted on Unit 2 when the first irradiated fuel assembly is transferred through the SFTT to determine if any other streaming problems need to be corrected.

Our efforts dist:" sed above, to reduce radiation levels to

-acceptable values during operation of the SFTT, precludes the need for procedures for. access control and radiation monitoring as well as an -

a9dibirfand visible radiation alarm system.
