Eisenhut, Acting Director Division of Operating Reactors U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Comission Washington, D. C. 20555 Docket No. 50-312 Rancho Seco Nuclear Generating Station, Unit No. 1

Dear Mr. Eisenhut:

Your letter of February 25, 1980 requested site specific infor-mation concerning inspection, operation, and material composition of the low pressure turbines at the P,ancho Seco Nuclear Generating Station. The attachments to this letter provide the information for each item requested. Westinghouse was to have furnished to us a request and affi-davit that information identified by them as being proprietary be so identified in our submittal and the justification for nondisclosure. Due to circumstances these documents did not arrive in time for us to include them in our answer to your February 25, 1980 letter. However, Westing-house in an understanding with Mr. Ross of your office agreed that we .could send the Westinghouse request and affidavit to you when we received them and your office would honor their request for nondisclosure. In our answers to your questions we have identified the infor-mation that Westinghouse has told us it considers proprietary. Also, we have supplied similar data sheets minus the proprietary information that can be placed in the public document room. Please contact us if you have any additional questions. Sincerely yours, b.b. h J. J. Mattimoe Assistant General Manager and Chief Engineer Sworn' to and subscribed before .me this --/7 ( day of March,1980 -6

Provide?informatio'n-on type offturbine. Response: The' unit consists.of one tandem compound four flow, three casing condensing,1800 RPM turbine utilizing 44 inch _last row - -blades in each low pressure element. The. low pressure' element is ' designated ~as a Building' Block 281. ~2.--Request (18)- Number of hours of operation for each LP turbine at time of last turbine' inspection;or if not inspected, postulated to turbine inspection. Response: During the 1977 refueling botn. low pressure turbines were inspected. LAt that time both-turbines.had operated 8091.6 hours. During the 1978 refueling the No. 2 low pressure turbine, was inspected. c The total number of hours of operation on each low pressure turbine at that time was 16'215.8 hours. It is planned to inspect both low. pressure' turbines during:the 1981 refueling. 3. Request (lC) Number of. turbine' trips and overspeeds. . Response: Trips due to(Surveillance Procedures-12 Trips due to Other Tests 4 ' Trips due_to-Reactor Trips 17 Trips due to Normal. Shutdowns-36 -Total 69 There were no trips due'to overspeed. -4. Request'(IDl) I !Give the-type'of material including material specifications for each disc.- L -Response: The type lof material is Ni-Cr-Mo-V steel similar to ASTM-471. -The minimum-yield strength for each disc is given in Section B of Enclosure No. 1.
