~ ENCLOSURE 3
' RESPONSE TO NRC-01E LETTER FROM J. T. SUTl!ERLAND TO 11. G. PARRIS DATED OCTOBER 30, 1979~
REFERENCE:
RI1:79-01D, 15000039
.The radioactive materials shipment referred to in the inspection report Evas a-shipment of-two spent fuel racks. The boxes in which these racks were shipped were'approximately 7. feet 2 inches in width and 16 feet in length.
e The van-type trailer used for the transportation of these racks measured 7-feet 5 inches in width and 40 feet in length (internal dimensions).
Because of the close fit of the boxes' sides, we believed it was unnecessary to block or brace them on the sides. However, the boxes were blocked in front and rear by nailing two-by-fours to the floor of the trailer to prevent the boxes from shifting forward.or to the rear.
~
f.
We believe that this blocking satisfies the requirements of Title 49 Code of Federa1' Regulations Parts 173.392 and 177.842.
If you do not concur in this, we would appreciate your thoughts on the subject.
