EilVIR0f;MEilTAL REVIEW OF AME!!DMEftT APPLICATI0f1 DATED FEBRUARY 18, 1980 pckgrnund Ej letter dated February 18, 1930, Babcock & Wilcox, Lynchburg Research C=nter (the licensee) applied for a license amendment to allow the con-Itruction and use of a temporary addition to their solid waste storage facility (Building J).

The proposed addition to Building J will be used for temporary storage of transuranium we te generated in the hot cell c:e ra ti ons.

[iscussion T.e purpose of the proposed construction is to provide storage space for t ansuranium wastes until a licensed contractor is identified to receive t e waste.

In the past, this type of waste was shipped to a disposal ficility; however, the licensee was notified, in October 1979, tivat the cis;cIal facility was no longer accepting transuranic wastes.

Tne proposed addition will consist of a concrete slab 20 feet long and 32 feet wide added to the northwest side of Building J.

The land on which this construction is to take place was already committed for storage of radioactive waste. Although some localized dust will be generated during "e construction, it will not have significant impact on the general public L3cause of the relatively small-scale operation on the large area of the site (525 acres).

The waste stored is in closed DOT or I;RC-approved metal c:ntainers suitable for offsite shipmert; therefore, there is essentially r

release of radioactive materials inte the environment under normal c:nditions.
