Subject:

Recirculation Pump Trip Modification at Vermont Yankee

Dear Sir:

The purpose of this letter is to formally submit additional information concerning the subject modification as discussed with Mr. Scholl of your staff in Reference (c). Mr. Scholl expressed a concern regarding the environmental qualifications of the p ower supplies and inverters to be installed as part of the analog system described in Reference (b). The modification at Vermont Yankee will employ a 24 volt battery system in place of inverters.

Vermont Yankee has specified that the power supplies and batteries for this modification be seismically qualified, Class 1E, and designed to function in the post-accident reactor building environment.

All required documentation will be available at the plant site for NRC review when the modification is complete.

We trust this information will be satisfactory; however, should you have any further questions, please contact us.

Very truly yours, VERMONT YANKEE NUCLEAR POWER CORPORATION R. L. Smith Licensing Engineer RLS/smw l
