Dear Mr. O'Reilly:

SUBJECT:

Grand Gulf Nuclear Station Units 1 and 2 Docket Nos. 50-416 and 50-417 File 0260/0266/15521/15525 -

PRD-79/20, Amendment to Final Report - Safety Related HVAC Ductwork Bechtel MCAR - GGNS No. 58 AECM-80/54 Our final report, AECM-80/52, on a potentially repartable deficiency associated with welds in safety related H'IAC ductwork was submitted to you on February 29, 1980. That report presented our determination that this matter was not reportable under 10 CFR 50.55(e).

A recent review of this subject revealed an error in that report of February 29, 1980. The testing of sample portions referenced in the second paragraph incorrectly describes these portions as " duct systems with lap welds." These portions were fabricated with butt welded seams. This testing was incorrectly referenced and pertains to the original testing of ductwork with butt welded seams. The analysis of ductwork with lap walded seams, for the purposes of evaluating the above referenced deficiency, was mathematical in nature and involved no actual testing.

Tle corrected second paragraph of the above referenced final report l reads es follows:

l "A mathematical analysis of duct systems with lap welded seams was conducted. The analysis indicated that alla stresses developed were considerably lower than allowable levels. Based on this evaluation, it is concluded that the use of the lap welded duct that has been fabricated will not adversely affect the safety of plant operations. There- -

fore, this problem is not reportable within the meaning of 10 CFR 50.55(e)."

This error pertains solely to the referencing of the source analysis 4(

and does, not invalidate or alter the conclusions as presented in our above referenced final report.
