ENCLOSURE (1)
TYPES OF CELLS American Air Filter, Type II adsorber cells were initially installed into the Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant in 1974 and 1975 by American Air Filter representatives. All installed adsorber cells are built as pictured in Enclosure (2).
The perforated screen is rolled up around the edges and is spot welded around the perimeter of the casing with a spacing of approx-imately one (1) inch between welds.
The screen is under the frame which allows no chance of charcoal being lost during shipping, handling, storage or while in service.
The casing is of all welded construction with the exception of two (2) fill holes in the rear of the cell. These fill holes are approximately two (2) inches in diameter with covers secured with pop rivets.
In October,1979, while perfoming under FCR 78-127, the installa-tion of Nuclear Consulting test cells, various American Air Filter cells were removed and the fill covers were taken off.
All charcoal in these cells was found to be fully packed with no evidence of sagging, separation or leakage.
American Air Filter, Type II, cells are installed in the following systems:
Number of Cells Post Loci 12 Spent Fuel Pool 96 Penetration Room 12 ECCS Pump Room 24 Containment Iodine 360 504 Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant personnel have been perfoming visual inspection on all filter housings while perfoming Surveillance Test Procedures as required by Technical Specifications 3/4.6.3,3/4.6.6, 3/4.7.6, 3/4.7.7, and 3/4.9.12 in accordance with ANSI Standard N510-1973, Section 5.
These inspections by our personnel have been perfomed since 1975.
All filter housings were visually inspected on February 26, 1980, with the exception of the Containment Iodine units. These units were tested and inspected during the last refueling outages, Unit 1 on July 18, 1979, and Unit 2 on November 7,1979.

All replacement cells on hand are Type II, designed and built by Nuclear Consulting and are stored properly in accordance with the American Association for Contamination Control's designation CS-8T.
Due to the construction methods utilized by Nuclear Consulting, shown in Enclosure (2), we believe that their cells will perform as well as the American Air Filter cells. A visual inspection of these replace-ment cells confirms that no leakage exists and that all screens show no evidence of sagging, i
