Dear Dr. Hendrie:
RE: NUCLEAR CRUD - DRESDEI I ANI ATIETT 20 SOLVE THIS liUCLEAR CRUD PR03LEN WITHOUT A, FULL E!VIRONFZiTAL IGACT STATHEIT IS IR?2SPONSI3LI! NO THOEDUGH HiVIRoli131TAL E@ACT STUDI HAS BEEN MADE TO DATE.
CEJD, radioactive metal oxides which act like rust, corrodes the pipe lines thich -arry cooling uator to the core in a nuclear reactor.
here are five (5) miles of these pipe lines in each reactor.
Co::sontrealth Edison vants to decontaninate its Dresden I plant (in niinois) by flushing 85,000 ganons of caustic solvent throug1 the pipes to remove the crud. his. will cause the solvent itself to become radioactivo.
After the flushing, the liquid from the residue will be evaporated, leaving the radioactive residue. his residue vill then be nixed with cement and dunpod into 600 - 55-ganon drums.
-WHERE WILL ICz.SE DRUMS BE STORED 7
-HN IE'G WILL LIIS HATE:tIAL EE HELD El THE DRUES SEFORE IT LEAZS OUT, COIITAMI'ATIiG THE GROEID AND WATER 7 Radioactive druns have leaked at West Valley, N!; Maxey Flats, Er and Sheffield, ILL.
Tho cost for the Dresden plant aleno is 36 MILLIO:1 DOLLARS. 2hc U.S. is going to subsidise the CRUD project trith over 8 million dollars. Le remaining cost to be divided betueen the consumer, tdio trill be charged hisher rates, and Con Ed. Wiat is fair about making the taxpayer pay for the unsolved problens of a nonopoly???
hough the Dresden plant vill be the pilot est, decontanination is planned for every nuclear plant nation: ride; a cost estinated at 1.5 BILLION D3LLARS.
I rosent being made a nuclear guinea pig for this experiment.
There is no guarantee that the decontanination will actuany work.
There is no solution to the problen of added radioactive waste in drums.
DO UOT ALLON C012EiWEALTH EDISOU TO PROCEEDH.'!
CALL FOR A FULL AND COMPISTE DIVIPanEITAL 29ACT STATHE!T Ligt!
Sincerely, cc: Governor Janes Zicnpson
