20555 License No. DPR-32

Dear Mr. Denton:

STEAM GENERATOR REPLACEMENT SCHEDULE SURRY UNIT NO. 1 In our letter, Serial No. 150, dated February 26, 1980, we indicated that we planned to begin the outage on Surry Unit No. 1 for s*.eam generator replace-ment in May, 1980, but that this schedule might be delayed by the turbine inspection and repair work underway at that time.

That work has in fact delayed the schedule and it is currently planned to return Surry Unit No. I to service upon completion of the turbine repair, operate the unit through the summer, then remove the unit from service in September,1980 for refueling and steam generator replacement.

However, in light of current economic and financial conditions, we are now considering further delaying the replacement outage beyond the currently scheduled date. Under this plan, Surry Unit No. I would be shutdown in Septem-ber, 1980 for refueling and steam generator inspection and returned to service under the current operating restrictions for up to a full eighteen (18) month fuel cycle af ter which the unit would be taken out of service for steam gene-rator replacement.

Implementation of the following modifications currently scheduled for comple-tion during the steam generator replacement outage would be delayed should the replacement outage be postponed:

s 1.

Modifications to the Conta inment Spray System as described in our letter, Serial No. 045/020177 dated April 4, 1977.

2.

%difica t ions to the Auxiliary Building Ventilation System as de-scribed in our letter, Serial No. 045B/020177 dated August 9, 1977.

3.

Net Positive Suction Head Modifications required to increase the

NPSH available to the Low Head Safety Injection Pumps and the Inside Recirculation Spray Pumps as described in our letter, Serial No.

(Modifications were made to increase the NPSH available to the Outside Recirculation Spray Pumps during the current outage.)

Low Head Safety Injection and Outside Recirculation Spray Pump Bell-mouth Modifications including installation of flow splitters to stabilize suction flow as described in our letter, Serial No. 269C/

5.

Containment Cooling System Modifications inside containment including installation of air handling systems to provide better air circula-tion in the containment as described in our letter, Serial No. 262/

6.

Condenser Rebuild Modifications including installation of titanium tubes and new tubesheets as described in our submittal entitled

" Steam Generator Repair Program".

7.

Addition of a full flow deep bed Condensate Polishing System as described in the " Steam Generator Repair Program".

Other modifications required by the NRC on Surry Unit No. 1, including Fire Protection Modifications and TMI Category "B" requirements, will be installed as per our previous commitments and will not be affected by a delay in the steam generator replacement outage.

Please advise us of any question or comment you may have concerning this matter.

We are available to discuss the proposed delay in replacement of the Surry Unit No. I steam generators and associated modifications at your convenience.

Very truly yours,
