DESCRIPTIVE TEXT OF ROCK BORINGS General Geology The Sequoyah Nuclear Plant site is underlain by complexly folded, interbedded 1hestones and shales of the Conasauga formation of Middle Cambrian Age. The strike of the strata averages N 30 Z,

which essentially parallel to the centerline of the reactors. The dip of the strata varies because of the numerous folds, but is normally steep, ranging from 50 SE to vertical.

Beneath the WPA and CDWE buildings the lhestor.as are medium gray, medium to fine grained, and constitute 95 percent of the rock. -The additional 5 percent consists of thin shale lenses or stringers with occasional beds of grey-green shale. Results.of unconfined compression test of two samples beneath these buildings give strengths of 11,300 psi and 13,500 psi for the limestone with interbedded shale stringers.

Shale beneath the plant indicated a compressive strength of 5,758 psi.

Drilling Program

~

One vertical and three angle core holes were drilled on the north and south sides of the WPA and CDNE buildings, respectively. Rese core holes are shown in plan on figure 1 and in section on figure 2.

~

WPA Area Vertical core hole 1-RV was drilled 5 feet from a pile whose tip elevation is 661.8. This hole encountered rock at e19vation 669.o and two filled cavities below to elevation 662.4. Inis hole may have encountered a ledge or step on the side of the excavation resulting in a higher top of rock tha.1 the pile tip. The cavities near the rock surface prevented geophysical logging of this hole.

Angle core hole 1-RS encountered top of rock at elevation 683 9 Since this hole started 10 feet north of the building it is reasonable te assume that the hole started in top of rock outside the excavation.

Both the core loss and cavity recorded on the drill log is depicted as a cavity (increase in counts) on the gamma gn=ma geophysical log (see figure 4).

'Ihe 2-foot shale zone at elevation 674.0 is represented by an increase in counts on the gamma ray log.

It should be noted that the signature of the gamma gamma sonde shows no signifi-cant change between the limestone and shale beds. This indicating that the relative density of these two materials are similar. All the ecre was recovered below elevation 677.5 indicating sound bearing rock.

i l

Core hole 3-RS is located 3.6 feet north of the building and angled to intersect the pile 1 foot below the pile tip elevation 683 5 Top of rock was encountered at elevation 683.3, thus indicating good correlation with the pile tip. The 0.6-foot core loss is indicated as a cavity on all four geophysical sondes (see figure 3). Except for the core loss, rock recovery was good indicating sound rock is supporting the pile.

Angle core hole 4-RS encountered top of rock at elevation 668.5 some 7 feet above the pile tip. Since the rock is dipping nearly vertical and cavities were reported and verified on the geophysical sondes (see figure 5), this pile was probably driven into weathered rock until refusal was met on sound rock at elevation 661.8.

CDWE Building Vertical core hole 2-RV was drilled 6.2 feet south of the building and encountered rock at elevation 6713 Three open or filled cavities were encountered in the upper 5 feet of rock, thus blocking the hole for the geophysical probes. Sound rock was encountered at elevation 666.6 which generally corresponds to the pile tip elevation of 667.8. This difference is due to the 7 feet between the hole and the pile and to the steep dip of the beddin(;.

Angle core hole 2-RS encountered top of rock at elevation 677.4 probablf outside the excavation for this building. ne filled cavities above elevation 667 7 probably represents the corner of the excavation. Good core recovery below the pile tip elevation 665 9 would represent sound bearing rock for the pile. This hole was blocked and could not be geophysically logged.

Angle core hole 5-RS encountered weathered rock outside the excavation.

This is represented by the open cavities and core loss reported and verified on the geophysical legs on figure 6.

The three core loss areas reported between elevations 668.4 and 662 7 are shown as' good rock on the geophysical logs. Bus the rock below the pile tip at elevation 671 9 would be all sound limestone and shale.

Angle core hole 6-RS encountered top of rock at elevation 673.4 after previous attempts hit the pile higher. This top of rock elevation would correspond to the adjacent pile tip elevations.

See figures 2 and 7 for details of this hole. All rock encountered in this hole was of exceptional quality which would support the pile.

Conclusion Based on all of the data gathered and the excellent correlation between the rock core and geophysical logging, we conclude the rock encountered beneath these buildings is of excellent quality limestone and shale. This rock would represent A scund bearing surface for the piles.

2

Georhysical Ingning The following geophysical logging techniques were conducted for the cooling tower exploration program at our Phipps Bend Nuclear Plant.

These techniques and descriptions are appropriate for the geophysical logging at Sequoyah Nuclear Plant.

Geophysical logging procedures used in the foundation i

exploration for cooling tower PB1 consisted of uphole sonics, gamma-gamma density, mechanical caliper, and natural gamma ray.

The following are brief descriptions of the procedures for producing each type of log.

Sonic Log

~

A sonic log shows travel times through rock which are

.. translated to velocities.

Based on 2 foot transmitter-

~

to-receiver spacing, the log shows extreme detail of I

the borehole wall. As the transmitter crosses discontinuitites such as clay seams, weathered partings, and fractures, velocitids change drastically or cause distortion of the compressional wave front. The i

thickness of the discontinuity can be measured by i

subtracting 2 scale feet from the distorted wave front, and the remainder is the thickness of the discontinuity.

If the distortion is 1 scale foot, the discontinuity is less than 1/8-inch ~ thick. This evaluation has been substantiated by recording sonic logs in core holes and comparing the results with known discontinuities found in core samples.

Gamma-Gamma Density Log I

As the gamma-gamma tool is drawn up the borehole, ganma rays are radiated from a radioactive source into

+

.the surrounding material.

Some rays are scattered and absorbed by collisions with electrons within the formation, whereas others return to a radiation detector.

The number of returned rays is proportional to the bulk density. Zones of weathered rock along the walls of a borehole show a higher number of counts than unweathered rock.

Caliper tog A summation caliper was used in the foundation evaluation.

With this probe all three caliper arms respond together to give a single trace of variations in borehole diameter.

Natural Gamma Ray Log e

The natural gamma tool responds to various radioactive materials that naturally occur in all rocks. The log is used for lithologic identification and stratigraphic correlation and is not sensitive to weathering.

9

- Explanation of Weathering Terms Used on Geologic Logs Cavity Individual Log Response:

A.

Sonic log shows a complite distortion of the first compressional wave arrival.

B.

Gamma-gamma log shows a substantial increase in counts per second from that obtained with sound rock.

C.

Caliper log shows the arms partially to fully extended in a distinct, isolated anomaly..

==

Description:==

Open void.

W.R. - Weathered Rock Individual Log Response:

A.

Sonic log shows a complete distortion of the first compressional wave arrival.

B.

Gamma-gamna log shows a moderate increase in counts per second from that obtained with sound rock.

C.

Caliper log shows the arms partially extended.

==

Description:==

Some chemical alteration and staining has occurred, although many rock cha'racteristics are still evident.

l

W.P. - Weathered Parting Individual Log Response:

A.

Sonic log shows that the first compressional wave is offset, and the following wave fronts are broken.

~

B.

If the sonic log is absent, the gamma-gamma log shows a slight to moderate increase'in counts per second from that obtained with sound rock and the caliper log shows the arms slightly extended.

C.

If the sonic and caliper logs are both absent, the gamma-gamna log shows a slight increase in counts per second from that obtained with sound rock. _
