Dear Mr. Grossman:
This is in response to your letter dated April 14, 1980 in which you requested, pursuant to the Freedom of Information Act, a copy of two specific documents contained in the " nugget file."
Please find enclosed a copy of these two documents.
For your information, the " nugget file" refers to a group of records collected by Dr. S. H. Hanauer over a period of many years.
It consists of Licensee Event Reports and other material selected by Dr. Hanauer as interesting and potentially useful in his work on reactor safety.
It does not represent a systematic review or selection of events in operating reactors. With the exception of some early notes, all of the records were publicly available long before they were furnished to the Union of Concerned Scientists in 1976 in response to a Freedom of Information Act Request. For further information on the nature of the " nugget file", I am enclosing a statement by Dr. Hanauer issued in March 1979.
The " nugget file" consists of approximately 1800 pages and has been available for purchase since 1976.
You may order copies of any document in the " nugget file" at a cost of eight cents ($0.08) per page by writing directly to the NRC Public Document Room (PDR),1717 H Street, N.W.,
Washington, DC 20555. Upon your agreement to pay the reproduction charges, the PDR will arrange for the records to be reproduced by Potomac Research, Inc., a private reproduction contractor servicing the PDR.
You will be billed by Potomac Research, Inc. for the reproduction charges, plus tax and postage.
