Grand Gulf Nuclear Station Units 1 and 2 Docket Nos. 50-416/417 File 0272/15525/15526 PRD-80/08, Status Report, y Limitorque Motor Operator Malfunctions AECM-80/74 On March 14, 1980, Mississippi Power & Light Company notified Mr. F. Cantrell of your office of a Potentially Reportable Deficiency (PRD) at the Grand Gulf Nuclear Station construction site. The deficiency-con-cerns malfunctions of Limitorque motor operators.
Our initial findings indicate that the valve stem protectors caused the motor operator to malfunction, preventing the associated valve from opening to its full position. The problem is apparently related to the excessive threading of the stem protector.
While this malfunction was noted during testing of non-safety re-lated systems, this type operator (Limitorque Valve Operator, Type SMB) is employed in safety related systems. Our investigation into the safety implications of this deficiency is in progress and is being documented under Bechtel Management Corrective Action Report (MCAR)-GGNS No. 65.
We expect to provide to you our final report on this matter by July 28, 1980.
