MR. J. P. O'REILLY, DIRECTOR
Dear Mr. O'Reilly:
SUBJECT:
Grand Gulf Nuclear Station Units 1 and 2, Dochet Nos. 50-416/417 File 0272/15525/15526 PRD-80/09, Status Report, Pipe Hanger Nonc'onformances AECM-80/82 On March 19, 1980, Mississippi Power & Light Company notified Mr. F. Cantrell of your office of a potentially reportable deficiency at the Grand Gulf Nuclear Station construction site. The deficiency concerns pipe hanger nonconformances.
This matter was identified in an NRC jobsite visit, designated 50-416/80-08.
As a result of that visit, an investigative inspection of seventy-seven (77) pipe hanger installations was conducted. This inspection revealed that twenty-three (23) of the hangers inspected exhibited specification nonconformances.
Currently, these nonconformances are being evaluated. Our preliminary findings indicate that this deficiency was due, at least in part, to inadequate training and/or inspection procedures.
Corrective actions proposed or taken, to date, include:
1.
A complete reinspection of all accessible pipe hangers will be conducted.
Data from reinspections and any other available information will be used in the evaluation of any inaccessible hangers.
2.
The applicable quality control instruction pertaining to the inspection of hanger installation has been revised. This revision expands the description and scope of aspects to be inspected. Training is scheduled as appropriate, to insure personnel familiarity with the revised 30/[
instruction.
