Mr. J. P. O'Reilly, Director

Dear Mr. O'Reilly:

SUBJECT:

Grand Gulf Nuclear Station Units 1 and 2 Docket Nos. 50-416/417 File 0272/15525/15526 PRD-80/01, Status Report #2, CR2940 Handswitch Failure AECM-80/78 On January 25, 1980, Mississippi Power & Light notified Mr. M. J. Gouge of your office of a Potentially Reportable Deficiency (PRD) at the Grand Gulf Nuclear Station construction site. The deficiency concerns the failure of handswitch CR2940-US203E supplied by General Electric.

The faulty handswitch was employed in the Plant Service Water system, a non-safety related application. As used in this application, it is our conclusion that this deficiency would not have adversely affected the safety of plant operations.

Switches of similar design are procured through safety level controls and are employed in several safety-related systems. For this reason, the faulty switch was returned to General Electric for a failure analysis and further evaluation.

This evaluation should aid us in determining the generic safety implications, if any, of this deficiency.

We now expect to provide our final report and determination of report-ability on this matter by June 18, 1980.

Yours truly, f
