Mr. James P. O'Reilly Gentlemen:

On March 6, 1980, the Georgia Power Company (GPC) provided a partial response to I&E Bulletin 79-01B, " Environmental Qualification of Class lE Equipment".

In our previous letter we stated that a complete response was not possible at that time due to the enormous number of manhours involved in gathering and reviewing the information requested. To date, Bechtel Power Corporation has expended approximately 8000 manhours in developing the response to T&E Bulletin 79-OlB for Plant Hatch Units 1 and 2.

An additional 4000 to 6000 manhours will be required by Bechtel to complete their portion of the task. Much of the work remaining involves gathering qualification data from the various vendors for review against the plant specific accident environmental conditions. The turn around time to receive the necessary vendor information is highly uncertain. However, we estimate that enough information will be available to submit : meaningful report for the Bechtel supplied Unit 1 and Unit 2 components br August 1, 1980.

To review the environmental qualifications of the NSSS equipment, much information is needed from General Electric (GE). We have requested GE to provide the necessary information. GE has provided a schedule for providing the information on a generic basis. GE estimated 26 weeks to complete 85%

of the task and 38 weeks for 100% completion. We estimate these dates to be October 3, 1980, and December 26, 1980, respectively. Following review of the GE supplied information a report will be submitted to the NRC. We estimate this report can be submitted eight weeks after receipt of the GE in-formation.

It should be understood that the qualification review required by I&E Bulletin 79-OlB goes far beyond the qualification criteria established in the FSARs for Plant Hatch. As a result, much of the information required is not readily available.
