Subject:

Automatic Initiation of Auxiliary Feedwater System (AFWS)

Dear Sir:

This letter is written in response to your letter, Reference (b), in which you request that Maine Yankee commit to: (1) install a control grade system for automatic initiation of AFWS flow by June 1,1980; and (2) install a safety-grade system prior to January 1,1981.

Maine Yankee has installed the required control grade hardware to allow for automatic initiation of AFWS flow, and has awaited E C approval to implement the system pursuant to your letter, Reference (c). Maine Yankee comits to complete the implementation to enable operation not later than June 1, 1980. This installation was detailed in our letter, Reference (d).,

Maine Yankee is presently developing a safety-grade system for automatic initiation of AFF flow, which will be submitted for your review in a timely manner. Implementation of the safety-grade system by January 1,1981, will require prompt W C review, and more significantly, E C approval of our proposed design. We wish to point out that any review delay or design changes required by your staff could prevent Maine Yankee from completing the safety-grade installation by the required date.

We trust this information is satisfactory; however, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Very truly yours, MAIE YANKEE ATOMIC POWER COMPANY b
