Dear Sir:

DPR-50 and DPR-73 Docket Nos. 50-289 and 50-320 Radwaste Storage anks Three Mile Island Unit I (TMI-1) has retained two Reactor Coolant Bleed Holdup Tanks essentially empty in order to provide approximately 160,000 gallons of shielc'ed storage capacity for TMI-II water. This letter is to inform you that as of itarch 26, 1980 the capacity will be maintained by Reactor Coolant Bleed Holdup Tank IA of Unit I and 1A of Unit II.

require maintenance of... " suitable tankage at TMI-l that could be used to store waste water frca TMI-2"... In accordance with that requirement two (2) T?!I-l bleed tanks have been maintained empty. The process path of preference for transferring the TMI-2 BWST to TMI-l requires the use of a portion of at least one of the bleed tanks.
In a recent meeting with members of the flRC site staff (including J. T. Collins),
the configuration of the suitable storage was more clearly established.
Two (2) reactor coolant bleed tanks with a combined capacity of 160,C00 a.
gallons must be maintained. The tanks could be located in either unit.
b.
If the TMI-l BWST was available and a TMI-l tank was used to fulfill the requirenent, that tank could be partially filled. The maximum liquid quantity in the bleed tank would be established to maintain the capability of pumping that liquid to the BWST while the other tank was being filled.
Subsequent verbal communications between myself and Don Haverkamp established that level to be 40,000 gallons.
If you have any questions, pleasc: contact me.
