Dear Mr. Grier:

Subject:

Maine Yankee I&E Bulletin 79 Status and Scheduled completion Since our commitment on November 30, Reference (h), we have achieved the following status as of 3/3/80 1.

Field verification of valve weights, existing pipe geometry, seismic support locations, function and all details are ccxnplete.

2.

A review of the field erk versus design shows the difference l

between the original design and the field verified conditions at a l

rate of approximately 30%.

Engineering evaluation of these l

differences has concluded that less than 1% of all supports checked under I&E Bulletin 79-14 requirements dictate hardere changes other than shims between pipe and support to meet original design criteria. The shims are required in about sixty places. Review of supports will be complete on 3/5/80. The review as of this status is 90-95% complete.

3.

Verification of valve weights is complete. Reanalysis required diere valve weights have been found to differ from those used in the original analysis will be complete prior to restart.

U.S. Nuclsor Regulatory Commiga ion March 4, 1980 AttGntion:

Offica of Inspection & Enforcement Pcg3 2 4.

All nonconformance to seismic supports identified in this effort which we determine to af fect system operability will be rectified prior to restart from the current outage. All shims required to meet original design criteria which will be inaccessible after startup will be installed prior to restart.

This will leave 30 to 40% of the shimming operation to be completed during March 1980 in accessible areas after restart. These will only include shims which we have determined do not affect system operability. -

5.

A final report of the inspection program, describing the results of the inspections, will be submitted to your office within 90 days after the restsrt from the current refueling outage. This report will contain the information specified in IE Bulletin 79-14, paragraphs 3 and 4.

If you required additional information on this matter please do not hes itate to contact us.

Very truly yours, MAINE YANKEE ATOMIC POWER COMPANY
