Docket No. 50-182

Purdue University

ATTN: Drs. P. Lykoudis

Department of Nuclear

Engineering and

P. L. Ziemer

Radiological Control Officer

Bionucleonics Department

West Lafayette, IN 47907

Gentlemen:

This refers to the inspection conducted by L. J. Hueter and C. C. Peck of

this office on January 23-24, 1980, of activities at Purdue University

authorized by NRC License No. R-87 and NRC License No. 13-02812-04, and to

the discussion of our findings with Drs. P. L. Ziemer, F. M. Clikeman, and

R. Landolt at the conclusion of the inspection.

The enclosed copy of our inspection report identifies areas examined

during the inspection. Within these areas, the inspection consisted of a

selective examination of procedures and representative records, observa-

tions, and interviews with personnel.

The inspectors also examined actions you have taken with respect to the

matters identified in your letter dated October 24, 1979, regarding the

storage of waste toluene in corroded cans (Report 79-03; License No.

13-02812-04). While these actions eliminate the hazards posed by toluene

leaking from corroded cans, the current practice of storing toluene in

open 55-gallon drums and other large open containers is undesirable.

Also, there is a need for improvement in the general housekeeping in the

same building, primarily because of the accumulation of nonreusable metal

cans and spilled absorbent material. We request that you inform us in

writing within twenty days of your receipt of this letter of your intend-

ed actions regarding these storage and housekeeping matters.

No items of noncompliance with hTC requirements were identified during the

course of this inspection.
