Zion Station Units 1 and 2 Thickness of Upper Pressure Vessel Heads.

NRC Docket Nos. 50--295 ano 50-304 Reference (a):

February 28, 1980 letter from A.

Schwencer to W.

F.

Naughton.

Dear Mr. Schwencer:

In Reference (a), the NRC Staff requested Commonwealth Edison to provide additional information concerning the thickness of the upper vessel head surrounding the control rod penetrations on Orawing No. 686J374 which Commonwealth Edison had previously provided to the Staff.

A review of the Zion archives indicates that the apparent increased thickness of tne upper vessel head surrounding the control rod penetrations does : tot exist.

The crawing is misleading.

The actual thickness tf the vessel is uniform and is 6-5/8" + 1/8" - 0" without the clad.

This information was provided to Mr. E. Fenstermachet of your staff in a Telecon on March 13, 1980.

Please address any additional questions that you might have concerning this matter to this office.

Very truly yours,

/Y(d$f s
