SUBJECT:

SUMMARY

0F MEETING HELD ON FEBRUARY 21, 1980 WITH SOUTH CAROLINA AND GAS COMPANY On February 21, 1980 we met with representatives of South Carolina Electric and Gas Company (SCE&G) and its consultants at the Summer facility to discuss the geology and seismology review for the site.

The NRC staff was joined by consultants from the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory (LASL).

The persons attending all or part of the meeting are listed in Encicsure 1.

During the course of the meeting and site visit, we examined (1) the U. 5.

Geological Survey strong motion accelerometer (SMA) on a dam for the Monticello Reservoir, (2) the central station for SCE&G's microseismic network, (3) a quarry adjacent to the site, and (4) the seismic accelerometers that are located inside the Summer facility.

During the tour of the site, SCE&G provided copics of a log for a hole drilled adjacent to the USGS SMA (Enclosure 2).

SCE&G had dug the bore hole to detennine how close the SMA was to bedrock.

It was dis-covered that bedrock was approximately fifty feet belcw the foundation of the SMA. Analysis of a magnitude 2.7 event recorded by the SMA, indicated that the response spectra of. the motion recorded by the SMA exceeded, at specific frequencies, the design response spectra for seismic Category I structures.

With data from the boring, SCEAG was going to determine if the motion recorded by the SMA was representative of the rock motion.

In the meeting following the site tour, we discussed with SCElG several draft requests for infonnation that resulted from LASL's review of the geology and seismology sections of the FSAR and spec lal reports on the reservoir induced scismici ty. We stated that the requests w1uld be reviewed based on the dis-cussions in the meeting and then fonnally t ansmitted to SCE&G.
