Dear Dr. Nelson:

As promised in our telephone conversation of March 11, 1980, you will find enclosed copies of the most recent correspondence concerning tailings management for the proposed Homestake Mining Company Pitch Project. Both

y the applicant and the State no longer consider burial at Site B as a viable

~ h alternative for tailings disposal, and consideration of Site A (Hale Gulch) has been reactivated.

The enclosed material includes a description of the work planned by the applicant's consultants to determine the suitability of Hale Gulch as a tailings disposal site and to provide the data needed to design an effective tailings impoundment area.

Please review this material and provide your estimate of the adequacy of the proposed program to meet the overall study objectives.

Feel free to contact either the applicant (George Simchuk, phone (303) 641-3295) or his consultants for any additional information you may require, but please keep me posted on your activities.

I will continue to forward all reports of progress on this project as they are received.

Sincerel,
