Nuclear Regulatory Ccemission On Issuance of Construction Permits And Operating Licenses, November 5, 1979
Dear Mr. Denton:
As a citizen of The United States, and as a person who derives my livelihood from the construction industry, I am concerned that the Nuclear Regulatory Commission may have over-reacted to the Three Mile Island accident by instituting the " freeze" referenced above.
Of course, safety must be paramount in these mat;ers, but it is fact that no one was killed or injared in that mishap and since then, I understand, the industry on its own has taken steps to make nuclear energy even safer.
In addition, I believe it is short-sighted not to heavily consider the fact that each nuclear unit awaiting a license could translate to consumption of 10 million barrels of oil a year, thereby increasing our dependence on foreign oils and further, could translate to $2 millien in interest charges per week to consumers.
On balance, I believe the risks of nuclear energy are mit.imal compared with the advantages, and as compared with normal risks in every day living.
Therefore, I strongly urge you to promptly lift the " freeze" of November 5, 1979.
Very truly yours, RAYMCND INTERNATIONAL BUILDERS, INC.
