Mr J G Keppler, Regional Director Office of Inspection & Enforcement US Nuclear Ec6ulatory Cor:nission Region'III 799 Roosevelt Road Glen Ellyn, IL 60137 MIDLAND NUCLEAR PLANT UNIT NO 1, DOCKET No 50-329 UNIT HO 2, DOCKET NO 50-330 LETDOWN COOLER SUPPORTS In accordance with the requirasents of 10 CFR 50 55(e), this letter constitutes an interim report concerning a potential overstress condition in letdown cooler supports.
This condition was determined to be reportable based on the nozzle specified desi n loads imposed on the coolers.
It is conceivable that if the actual 6
loads imposed on the supports are less than the design values, then the cooler supports will be adequate. The Architect-Enginebr for the Midland Plant has supplied the actual nozzle loads to B&W for their use. These nozzle loads will be analyzed for their effcets on the support structure to determine if modifications are required to the cooler's support system.
B&W made a 10 CFR 21 report on the same subject on February 28, 1980.
A copy of their written report is enclosed. This report provides detailed information concerning the overstress condition.
--Another report, either interim or final, will be sent on or before June 30, 1980.
