Subject:
Arkansas Nuclear One - Unit 1 Docket No. 50-313 License No. DPR-51 Westinghouse Low Pressure Turbine Rotor Cracking (File:
0285,1510.1)
Gentlemen:
Your letter of February 25, 1980 requested information concerning Westinghouse Low Pressure Turbine Rotors.
Our responses to the site specific questions were provided in a letter to you dated March 19, 1980. In response to the generic questions, the following is provided.
A letter dated March 14, 1980 to your Mr. Eisenhut from Mr. Schmerling (Westinghouse) provided responses to the generic questions. We concur with the responses provided by Westinghouse to questions I, II, III.A., IV.A.,
IV.B., IV.C., V, VI, VII, and VIII.
Question III.B. asks what actions have been recommended to utilities to minimize stress corrosion cracking. Westinghouse responded that they had developed recommended limits for steam purity.
It should be pointed our that the steam purity limits necessary to prevent stress corrosion cracking (if such limits exist) are not known at this time.
At this point in time, we feel that it is premature to place the blame for stress corrosion cracking on steam purity.
Therefore, our response to question III.B. is that the actions necessary to minimize stress corrosion cracking will not be known until Westinghouse identifies the causes of the cracking.
At that time we will address the action necessary to minimize stress corrosion cracking.
Very truly ours, A
