Post Office Box 480 Middletown, Pennsylvania 17057 717 944 4041 March 24, 1980 TLL 129 TMI Support Attn:

J. T. Collins, Deputy Director U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission c/o Three Mile Island Nuclear Station Middletown, Pennsylvania 17057

Dear Sir:

Three Mile Island Nuclear Station, Unit II (TMI-2)

Operating License No. DPR-73 Docket No. 50-320 EPICOR-1 Transfer Pursuant to separation of Unit I and Unit II, the relocation of the EPICOR 1 System will be effected in the next few months. As you know, EPICOR 1 has been processing low level waste water from Unit I and Unit II since the accident, and the system is presently located on the Unit I side of the new fence separating the units. Once relocated to the Unit II side of the fence, EPICOR 1 will be used exclusively for processing Unit II low level waste water, and Unit I will utilize the existing miscellaneous waste evaporator for that purpose. The new location of the EPICOR 1 System will be east of the TMI-II main plant complex and in the vicinity cf the present EPICOR II system.

j The experience to date with the EPICOR 1 System has been good.

It has pro-cessed more than 700,000 gallons of liquid waste with no forced outage.

Based on the experience and the need to provide a means to handle low level waste, we will continue to utilize the EPICOR 1 System periodically through-out recovery as required. After relocation, EPICOR 1 will continue to pro-cess only water having less than Ipc/ml gross activity, from the contamiga-ted drain tanks. Typically, this water has contained activity in the 10 to 10-3 /4c/ml range with approximately 10 percent of the liquids having activities as high as 10-1 mc/ml. The effluent from EPICOR 1 will be trans-ferred to monitor tanks, then to the Unit II evaporator condensate test tanks for discharge. Both sets of tanks will be sampled prior to transfer and all h

discharges will be additionally monitored by WDL-R-1311 and RML-7, in a man-CD T ner consistent with present practice.
