Limits and Precautions for RC Pumps and Motors May 16,1977 Date l m. i................. .... w The attached Sections 1.4 and 1.5 of the TMI-2 limits and precautions has been updated for the Bingham Pumps with 3 stage seals and Allis Chalmers motors. The attachment has not received the reviews and signatures to be considered officially part of DP1101.01, however, the final document is not anticipated to differ significantly. Included is a description of Figures 1 through 4 and Table 1 which gives minimum RCS pressure for starting RCP's under various conditions. This infor-mation although not part of DP 1101.01 may be of interest. LCM:NF Attachments O cc: w " spea91er L. R. Pletke gys K. R. Ellison./- J. A. Middleton J. D. Dempsey REVIEWED FOR ACCURACY R. W. O o Rgure 1 shows the boundaries of the allowable operating regime for the RC If no reactor core is installed, then System and pumps during plant heatup.the RC pumps should be operated above $Also shown in Figure 1 is the required pressure-temperature boundary for cstablishing criticality of the reactor core. Figure 2 exhibits the restrictive boundaries for cooling down the plant. The required pressure and temperature for proper fuel pin compression If all four RC pumps are shutdown, then RC pressures varies with core life. and temperatures should be maintained at values to the left of the dotted line. Figure 3 displays the minimum required RC pressure versus temperature for operating RC pumps either with a core installed or without a reactor core. RC pressure must be above the line labeled seal staging for RC pump operation. If any of the following pump combinations (1/0, 0/1, 1/1, 0/2, and 1/2) are operating and the decay heat removal system is operating simultaneously, then the RC pressure and temperatures should be maintained within the shaded area Note that during RCP operation prior to core installation that pump shown. NPSH (dashed line) is limiting factor rather than seal staging. Figure 4 presents an " operating" window for the simultaneous operation of the decay heat remaval system and selected combinations of RC pumps where two are operating in the A loop (with the pressurizer). The RC pressure required for the 1/1 pump combination ranges from 245 to 315 psig compared to a smaller range of 250 to 270 psig for two Loop A pumps operating with-out a core; therefore, in testing the decay heat removal system, operate with one RC pump on in each loop. O 9 t I

v. ~ O O O. The limits of RC pressure for operating various combinations of RC pumps has been summarized in the following table: TABLE 1 RC PRESSURE FOR STARTING RC PUMPS AT TMI-2 Required RC Pressure - psig Conditions Without Core With Core Start any RC pump > 248* > 245** Start 2nd pump Loop A > 248* > 220* Loop B > 248* > 245** Start 3rd pump Two in Loop A > 248* > 220* O Two in 'oog a > 248* > 24 5*.

  • Indicates required RC pressure increases with temperature.
    • Indicates required RC pressure decreases with temperature.

Figures 3 and 4 display the limiting conditions on RC pump operation below 300 F RC temperature. The limiting conditions of Figures 1 and 2 are applicable for RC temperatures greater than 300 F. O I i

(See Figures 1 through 4 attached) 02 Seal injection water flow and intermediate cooling water to the Q reactor coolant pumps must be established before starting any of the reactor coolant pumps. 03 Seal injection water flow must be started at least minutes ~ prior to starting a reactor coolant pump. (30 min.) 04 Seal injection water flow is required to all reactor coolant pumps when reactor coolant tempe'rature is above F, except when operating in the loss of injection mode. (200 F) 05 Loss of seal injection flow during RC pump operation does not require shutdown of the RC pumps as long as intermediate cooling water is being supplied. When the pump is running with component cooling water and without injection water, the seal staging outlet valve should be open. NOTE: While it is possible to operate without seal injection flow, this mode is not recommended by B&W since all redundancy of cooling is lost, and because of Item 06 below. 06 Operating the reactor coolunt pump in the loss of injection mode with component cooling water operating may result in damage to the pump bearing and/or seals from particles in the reactor coolant. 1 O V 07 Maximum allowable temperature of controlled bleed off seal return water (upper seal staging outlet) is F. (185 F) 08 Normal Seal Injection Flow is gpm/ pump. (10 gpm/ pump)

l. O O O os aeactor cooient pu=P operation must be terminated 4-ediateir when both seal injection water and intermediate cooling water are lost. 10 Prior to reactor coolant pump startup with seal injection operating, verify seal staging pressures are approximately one-third of seal injection pressure across each stage. 11 Do not start a MU pump if no others are running and an open flow path to the reactor coolant pump seals exists. NOTE: The restriction bushing in the reactor coolant pump may be exposed to excessive DP. 12 A controlled bleedoff line is necessary to stage the DP across the mechanical seals. Its nortial flow rate is gpm. (1.1 gpm) ~ 13 Verify the controlled bleedoff valves close if: 1. Injection is lost when pump is idle. 2. Both seal injection and cooling water are lost. Valves should open seconds prior to motor energization. (30 seconds) 14 The controlled bleedoff valve should be closed when the reactor A coolant pressure is below psig. (150 psig) 15 Maximum seal staging flow is gpm with two lower seals failed. (1.9 gpm) 17 Maximum reactor coolant pump seal leakage (upper seal leakage plus return flow) is gpm. (1.9 gpm) 18 Maximum frame vibration during reactor coolant pump operation is inch. (.003 inches) 19 Shaft Vibration B&W Engineering shall be notified when reactor coolant pump vibration measured at the pump coupling reaches mils j peak to peak amplituce. (15 mils) NOTE: Shaft vibration of 20 mils is permissible for a period not to exceed 4 hours. 20 Upper seal bleedoff temperature above F may result in damage to seals and the pump must.be stopped. (185 F) 21 The pump should not be uncoupled from the motor with a full t unpressurized system. Do not start the injection system when pump is uncoupled. 1 O

.L o o 22 Prior to starting a reactor coolant pump, open the seal staging flow valve a minimum of minutes to vent the seal cavity area. Leave the seal staging flow valve open at all times when the pump is operating. The valve should not be opened when system pressure is below psig. (15 minutes) (150 psig) 23 Prior to starting a reactor coolant pump, the seal leakage chamber must be filled with water. Seal leakage chamber should be full when the seal leakage alam is actuated. NOTE: Refilling the chamber is r.ot required unless the chamber is drained. Nomally an initial fill is sufficient since a nomal shutdown will not drain the chamber. 24 No operations involving breaching of an oil hydraulic system on a RCP motor are to be perfomed until the reactor coolant system has been coo' led to below the flash point of the oil. This includes maintenance, troubleshooting, fill and drain. NOTE: To allow a suitable safety margin, the reactor coolant system will be cooled to at least F below the flash point of the oil.
