The Comittee reviewed the following items:

1.

PROPOSED GUIDELINES FOR FIRE PROTECTION FOR NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS, and recomended approval subject to the following coments:

a.

A statement.should be included in the introduction that alternatives to the guidelines of the Branch Technical Position 9.5-1 will be considered.

b.

The guidelines should indicate that no water sources will be located i_n,the new fuel storage area.

11 references to backfitting in the Branch Technical Position ehrted, including the incomplete Appendix A.

However, the Committee indicated its specific in-terest in the details of how the guidelines were to be applied to applications in review, plants under construction, and l

operating plants. While noting the progress already made in this direction, the Comittee urged the completion and submittal to the Comittee of the staff recomendations in this regard.

TRIVIA, and concluded, on balance, that no c'hange to present pro-l cedures was warranted. The relative significance of an item brought to the Committee is often not apparent. What appears as insignificant 80020.70 7 %
