Initial Management Meeting and Exit Interview 1.

Objectives l

An initial management meeting and exit interview was conducted to acquaint the vendor's management with the NRC responsibility to i

protect the health and safety of the public and to inform them of certain responsibilities imposed on vendors by the " Energy Reorgan-ization Act of 1974" (Public Law 93-438). Those in attendance are denoted in paragraph A.

2.

Method of Accomplishment The preceding objectives were accomplished by:

a.

Describing the historical events that indicated the need for the Vendor Inspection Program.

b.

Explaining the inspection base and how the inspections are conducted.

c.

Describing how inspection results are documented and how proprietary items are handled, including the vendor's opportunity l

to review the report for the purpose of identifying items con-sidered to be proprietary.

Describing the vendor's responsibility in responding to identi-

.fied enforcement items relating to:

(1) Correction of the identified deviation.

(2) Action to be implemented to prevent recurrence.

Explaining that my activities during this inspection were in a support role to NRC personnel from Region I and subsequent routine inspections would be performed by NRC personnel from Region IV.

Findings n

The President of American Insulated Wire Corporation recognizes the importance of quality assurance and stressed that its necessity was a direction from his office. He also emphasized pride in the reputa-tion of the company and stated he would not permit its reputation to be compromised.

C.

QA Manual Review 1.

Objectives 4

The objectives of this area of the inspection were to verify that the QA Manual addressed the eighteen (18) criteria of Appendix B to 10 CFR 50 and had been endorsed by management as an authoritative document.

2.

Method of Accomplishment The preceding objectives were accomplished by reviewing the Quality Assurance Manual dated June 25, 1979.

3.

Findings Within this area of the inspection, no deviations or unresolved items were identified.

During the course of the inspection, it was observed that:

(1) Manufacturing also takes place at Attleboro, Massachusetts, (2) Several nuclear orders are currently in work, and (3) Purchase orders are placed by the agent / utility with a distributor, who in turn, initiates a purchase order which goes to American Insulated Wire Corporation.
