Mr. E. Kevin Cornell Deputy Executive Director for Operations Nuclear Regulatory Coiamission Washington, DC 20555
Dear Mr. Cornell:
Mr.1.arry Crocker, of the Special Inquiry Group, has requested information on Department of Defense support to U.S. Govern.nent agencies in relation to the Three Mile Island incident. Th.is 1ctter respends to his request.
During the period 31 March through 14 April 1979, logistic assistance, to in.:1ude military manpower, equipment, and transportation resources, was cuployed in support of the Nuclear Regulatory Comnission, the Federal Disaster Assistance Adninistration, the Ecpartments of Energy, Health, Education and' Welfare, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administ ration. The attachment provides a synopsis of support provided and includes all actions requested through the National Military Command Center and acted upon by the Joint Staff.
It is my understanding that some requests for support were handled on a direct basis between requesting agencies and individual service facilities. These may not all be included in the attached list.
In addition, while not implemented, contingency planning and preparations were made in the event an evacuation would have been ordered.
Any questions concerning this information should be directed to Major Emery J. Chase, my staff action officer, at 695-7936.
1 Sincerely, uq N.e$
