I apologise for not providing this response to you sooner but, as you are aware, the Comission and staff have been occupied with continued support of the efforts at B ree Mile Island, orders to other facilities, appearances before the presidant's Co=cission and various comittees of Congress that are investi;; sting the 3ree Mile Island accident, and the realignment of our own resources and priorities to give 4~=A4mte attention to the problea resulting from the accident.

We have taken a nu=ber of actions with respect to all nuclear power plants as a result of the Bree Mile Island Incident. Specifically, full-ti:na inspec-tors have been assigned to each operating plant utilizing Babcock & '.iilcos pressurised water reactors like those at Three Mile Island. In addition, all such plants were shut down and the licensees of each plant were instructad to provide ua with additional information about their facilities in light of the Three Mila incident. Aftar review of the information provided, orders were issued to the licensees that required the:n to nahe 1:amediate plant nodifica-tions, to provide additicnal operator trnin % g, and to revise certain oper-ating procedures. Additional long-ters actions were ordered to further upgrade certain plant systems and operator training and procedures. All of these plants have compliad with the orders and have been permitted to resume operatica, except of course the n ree Mile Island plant.

s In addition, licensees of all operating plants utilizing pressurized water reactors have been instructsd to take specific actions with regard to the status of certain equipment, plant procedures, operator actions and facility designs. Licenpees of all operating plants, including those utilising boiling water reactors,fhave been instructed to provide us with additional inforsation with regard to their facilities. in light of the nree Mile Island incident.

. We are currently reviewing the information provided. As soon as our review is complate, orders for modifications, as appropriate, will be issued to provide additional protection to the health and safety of the public.

In addition to the actions outlined above, THI-2 related stwHas were initi-ated in the areas of emergency preparedness, operator licensing renssessment, loss of feedwater event, small-break loss of coolant accidents, and lassons learned from the incident. In a number of areas work has progressed to the point where additional license requirements have been roer==anded.

A number of these recon===ndations have been approved and efforts have begun to imple-ment them.

I appreciata your concerns and assure you that every effort is being made to ensure the continued procaction of the health and safety of the public, not only at the Three Mila Island Station, but also at all nucisar power plants.
