Mr. Herbert H. Brown Director, Office of International and State Programs U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D.C.

20555

Dear Mr. Brown:

This is in response to your recent letter concerning this Commonwealth's nuclear accident planning activities.

With financial assistance recently extended under a Federal Disaster Preparedness Grant, our own personnel and consultants have been working with nuclear power station representatives and others, in the development of a sound technical base for the detailed emergency operational plans which are our objective. In this, I am pleased to be able to tell you, we feel we have made substantial progress.

During the weeks ahead, our technical personnel will arrange to meet with representatives of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and other Federal agencies concerned, to discuss details of our planning.

The purpose of this will, of course, be to make certain that State and rederal action plans are fully and effectively coordinated. Further, when our plans reach a point where testing is appropriate, we shall' welcome rederal observation of and participation in the exercises.

We appreciate your expressed interest and kind offer to assist in our planning efforts.

Sincerely, be 1
