Director of Regulation INSTRLDEUTATION TO DIAGNOSE THE COURSE OF A SERIOUS ACCIDENT Your memo of June 11. 1973, to R. Fraley, Executive Secretary, indi-cates that a report on monitoring post-accident conditions in power reactors is under review by the Regulatory Staff.
This issue has been discussed during the course of several recent project reviews and it appears that considerable information regarding plant status during potentially serious accidents, including conditions beyond those usually analyzed in the Safety Analysis Report, could be obtained from current.ly available and frequently already installed in-
~
strumentation, if' appropriate procedures and instructions were provided.

It is important that M em-m of adequnte range be ore-vD. Any procedures and/or equipnent provided for this purpcse should I
be relatively simple and straightforward to permit its effective use I
during an ace.ident situation.
The Committee suggests that the Regulatory Staff exa$aine this aspect of emergency preparedness in each review for an operating license.
