November 23, 1979 Dr. Walanne Steele Box 337, RD 4 Easton, Pennsylvania 18042
Dear Dr. Steele:
Thank you for your wire expressing your concern about the release of krypton-85 gas from the Three Mile Island nuclear power station.
I regret that our response has been delayed.
The accident and its con-sequences have created a substantial increase in our workload, which has prevented us from responding to you as promptly as we would have liked.
The release of krypton, or any other radioactive gases or liquids, is not currently permitted.
Before such releases take place, the NRC will evaluate their impacts and the evaluation will be made available to the publ ic.
By this course of action, we will assure that a thorough assess-ment is completed prior to release of the contaminated gases and that the health and safety of the offsile population will be protected.
An example of the type of evaluation that will be performed is the Environmental Assessment prepared by tha NRC staff concerning the use of EPICOR-II to process contaminated watar from the auxiliary building.
This assessment addresses only the processing of the water and not its disposal.
Prior to disposal, another assessment will be prepared to evaluate the alternative means of disposal. A copy of the Environmental Assessment is enclosed for your information.
I am pleased to provide you with this infrermation.
Sincerely,
,S? '
