- Carlisle, PA 17013 August 15, 1979 The President The White House Washington, D. C.
20500 Dear Mr. President We are writing as residents living within a 20 mile radius of TMI.
We are growing morf nnd mora emncerned_tbal_TMl_will once again be put into operation at the cost of hundreds of millions of dollars.
This will still be a source of potential death or near-death dealt out by a disgracefully managed plant which still con-tains radioactive materials which it does not know how to dispose of.
The Carlisle SENTINEL, August 14, 1979, reports that another emission of radioactive material will be vented from the plant shortly.
Recently a quantity of radioactive water was released into the Susquehanna.
Needless to say, we are now at the point at which we feel we do not know - and never will know - just when "they" are going to dump some of this radioactive material into the river or into the air.
As a nuclear engineer, Mr. President, we are aware that you know the dangers of these installat'.ons.
IS THIS THE ONLY CHOICE NE HAVE?
We have heard only too often that we MUST go "the nuclear way."
We would appreciate answers to the following questions:
- Have any studies been made regarding the conversion of TMI to a coal burning or gas burning plant?
Granted that converting to gas might be a short term solution, although now that the price is de-regulated, there seems to be an ample supply for the near future.
Granted that a large amount of money would have to be spent on the scrubbing process for a coal burning plant, would this be more expensive than restoring the plant to its nuclear fueled state?
If there are any studies being made on the conversion of will vo_u Dleas.L.lell us
/ TMI tJ_either.a., gas.or.. coal _ burning.. plant, who is making the studies, and how we may get further information
[
on this.
IF THERE IS NO MOVE BEING MADE IN THIS DIRECTION - WHY NOT?
,We are most strongly opposed to any further nuclear plants being built in Pennsylvania.
We have more than our fair share now.
Running to and fro all over the country, trying to dispose of our nuclear wastes, as TMI is doing at this time, proves we DO NOT KNOW how to dispose of them safely.
We fear, Mr. President, that we have put too many of our eggs into very fragile baskets indeed.
Sincerely yours, (Mrs. John F. Brougher)
John F. Brougher
