Three Mile Island Nuclear Station, Unit I (TMI-1)
Operating License No. DPR-50 Docket No. 50-289 IGSCC Investigation This is to confirm a telecen with Mr. A. Taboada of your staff on May 8,1980 regarding the subject issue. The telecon was to advise Mr. Taboada that the repair program for weld number M-47 has been altered to waive the requirement for weld buttering the inner diameter of the remaining pipe end.
The weld buttering process is described in Attachment 2 to our report submitted March 31, 1980. The reason for the waiver is that the 24 inch pipe size at standard schedule (0.375 inch wall) is not sufficiently rigid to permit buttering.
Heat distortion due to buttering precludes compliance with quality requirements for joint fit-up during installation.
This waiver applies to the repair of weld number M-47 only. Our report dated thrch 31, 1980 descirbes the repair program for all welds pending repair.
