Gentlemen:

In response to your letter dated December 17, 1979, which requested i additional information pertaining to our Fire Protection letters of September 1, October 18, 1978, and January 15, 1979, the following responses are provided to your questions.

1. (SER Item 3.4) Protection of Redundant Cables in the MCC Room

a. Cescribe the extent of coverage with carboline of the green civision cables within the room (show by sketch, etc.).

Resconse: The green division cable tray in this MCC Room is completely covered with a thin galvanized sheet metal flame snield. Where cables penetrate this flame shield, they and the hole which they pass through are completely covered with carboline. Where the red tray crosses over the green tray, the green cables have been entirely covered over with carbo-line. Attachment A, Page 1, shows the approximate coverage of carboline in the cross over area.

b. Describe the extent of coverage of tray EC 104/105 with marinite board.

Response: Attachment A, Page 1, shows the coverage of tray EC 104/105 with ma'rinite board.

c. Identify the thickr.ess of marinite board used and the distance the marinite extends beyond the side rails on either side of the tray.

Response: The marinite board used in this MCC Room is 1/2-inch l thick. This board extends beyond the side rails on either side of the red tray approximately 13 inches and on either side of the green tray approximately 13 inches and 18 inches, north and south sides respectively. Attachment A, Page 1, shows in de-tail the marinite board arrangement. )

2. (SER Item 3.8) Protection of Redundant Cables in the Electrical Equipment Room I

a. Same question as 1(c).

Response: The marinite board in the Electrical Equipment Room is 1/2-inch thick. The distance beyond the side rails which the marinite board extends is shown in Attachment 1, Page 2.

b. Identify the distance that the marinite extends beyond the cross-overs where safety cables cross in proximity to non-safety trays.

Resoonse: The two cable trays housing redundant diesel generator i cables in this room run perpendicular to each other. There are no non safety cable trays which would form a fire bridge between these two trays. Thus, besides the marinite board covering the cable tray, no additional marinite board coverage is provided in this area.

3. (SER Item 3.9) Protection of Redundant Cables in the Lower South Electrical Penetration Room

a. Same question as 1(c).

Response: The marinite board used in the two locations where non-safety related trays present a combustible pathway between redundant diesel generator cables, described in our January 15, is 1/2-inch thick. The coverage of these non-safety 1979, trays byletter,inite mar board is shown in Attachment A, Pages 3 and 4.

In both of these locations we are protecting conduit EB 1192.

b. Same question as 2(b). I Response: The coverage by marinite board of the two cross-overs l is shown in Attachment A, Pages 3 and 4. 1 l

4. (SER Item 3.9) Reactor Coolant Pump 011 Collection System SER Item 3.18 indicates that the reactor coolant pump oil collection system will be upgraded to provide collection capability at all po-tential leakage points. This was based on AP&L's commitment by letter of June 19, 1978, to meet staff position PF.20. This position called

, Mr. R. W. Reid May 12, 1980 for evaluation of the existing reactor coolant pump oil collection system and upgrading where necessary to assure that potential leak-age points were protected. This protection would include splash guards and collection pans for oil level sight glasses, flanged or gasketed oil connections, oil cooler (if external to reservoir),

lift pump, drain and fill connection points, and oil reservoirs.

However, information provided by the licensee does not provide an evaluation to show that the staff position is met, or indicate what modifications are required to meet the staff position.

A brief review by the staff indicates the following deficiencies:

a. No spray deflectors on flanged connections or collection pans under external piping and flanged connections;

b. No oil collection pans around the upper reservoir to collect leakage from fill connections, upper bearing oil gauges, and piping to the oil level transmitter;

c. No oil collection pans to collect leakage from lower bearing oil gauge and filler lines.

Therefore, provide an evaluation and details to show that the staff position is met or indicate what modifications will be made to meet the staff position.

Response; Attached for your review (Attachment B) are the drawings for additional oil collection pans and splash guards for the ANO-2 RCP's which will be installed by the end of the next refueling out-age. These design modifications were engineered considering all of the recommendations outlined in . sour Item H.

We request that your review of Attachment B be completed at the earliest possible date to accommodate our implementation schedule.

Gentlemen:

As required by the Fire Protecticn Safety Evaluation Report for ANO-2, the following information is provided to describe modificaticas performed..

These details could not be provided 90 days prior to implementation due to their implementation date being so soon after SER issuance. The following items refer to Table 3.1 of the ANO-2 Fire Protection SER.

Item 3.4 Marinite board has been installed over the red division tray. Green division cables in the vicinity of the red tray have been coated with Carboline.

Item 3.8 The trays which formed a combustible bridge between the redundant diesel generator cables have been covered by Marinite board.

Item 3.9 Two of the three nonsafety-related trays which presented a combustible pathway between redundant diesel generator cables have been covered with Marinite board. We chose to coat the third tray with Carboline as it is routed in a more congested area.

Item 3.10 As stated in Section 5.4.6 of th,e ANO-2 Fire Protection SER, we were to provide fire barriers where redundant safe shutdom cables cross common MENaOEA M4 DOLE SOUTM UTILITIES SYSTEM

As shown in the attached sketch, this is not the case. EB2228 follows the ceiling and wall while EB1191 is less than three ~ feet off the floor.

For this reason we do not intend to provide fire ~ barriers in this zone. .
