City of Berxe ey Eugene "Gus" Newport Office of the Mayor MAYOR April 17,1980 i

Dr. Harold R. Denton I

Director of Nuclear Reactor Regulation l

U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Comission Washington, D. C. 20555

Dear Dr. Denton,

On December 11, 1979, your office received a petition from the Friends of the Earth and the Berkeley City Council requesting the suspension of all actvities of the TRIGA reactor at Etcheverry Hall. As I understand, our petition is being treated under section 10 CFR 2.206 of the Commission's regulations and that you are planning to take action on the matter within a reasonable time.

I would like to know if the Nuclear Regulatory commission planned any hearings 1

I on this issue? And, if so, for when are they scheduled?

The operation of a nuclear reactor in the middle of Berkeley i

is a matter of great concern to myself and many residents. We must address this issue as soon as possible in order for the City l

and the Commission to work out a solution which will be mutually

~

satisfying.

I am looking forward to hearing from your office in the near future on this matter.

Sincerely,

(ipp gf j
